Gorgias vs Modern Alternatives: An Honest Comparison

Gorgias grew fast but teams are outgrowing it. What Gorgias does well, where it falls short, and what to look for in an alternative.

Published on 22 July 2026 · 9 min read · SamDesk Team

Two years ago, Gorgias was the obvious choice for Shopify stores looking for a helpdesk. Native Shopify integration, a clean interface, and a pricing model that seemed attractive for growing teams. Many ecommerce founders started with Gorgias and were happy with it.

But then the tickets grow. From 500 to 2,000 to 5,000 per month. And suddenly that pricing model is less attractive. The AI features turn out to be limited. The WooCommerce integration exists but feels like an afterthought. And the team that was once content with the basics wants more — more automation, more insight, more control.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. We regularly talk to teams that are outgrowing Gorgias and looking for an alternative that scales with them. This article is an honest comparison — not a sales pitch. We name what Gorgias does well, where it falls short, and what to watch for when picking an alternative.

What Gorgias Does Well

Honesty first. Gorgias earned its position for real reasons. There are concrete strengths you should know about, even if you are considering a switch.

Native Shopify integration. The Shopify connection in Gorgias is deep and reliable. Order data, customer details, products, and refunds are immediately available in the ticket view. For pure Shopify stores, this is a strong point that is hard to match.

Macros and rules. Gorgias offers a solid system for macros (quick replies) and rules (automation triggers). You can automatically tag, assign, and prioritize tickets based on content, customer type, or channel. For teams just starting with automation, this is sufficient.

Ecommerce focus. Unlike generic helpdesks like Zendesk or Freshdesk, Gorgias is specifically built for ecommerce. That shows in the interface, the terminology, and the available integrations. You do not have to figure out how to connect order data — it is already there.

Onboarding. Getting started with Gorgias is relatively straightforward. Most teams are operational within a day. Documentation is clear and tutorials are plentiful.

Where Gorgias Falls Short

Now the other side. The reason teams leave Gorgias is rarely a single issue. It is a combination of limitations that weigh heavier as the team grows.

The Pricing Model: Paying Per Ticket

For most teams, this is the tipping point. Gorgias charges per ticket, not per agent. On paper, that sounds economical — you only pay for what you use. In practice, it becomes unpredictable and expensive.

Imagine: you run a successful campaign and your ticket volume jumps from 2,000 to 4,000 in a month. Your support costs double, not because you hired more agents, but because more customers reached out. Your marketing success gets penalized with higher support costs. That is a perverse incentive.

With agent-based pricing, you know what you pay upfront. Five agents cost the same whether you handle 2,000 or 10,000 tickets. That makes budgeting predictable and scaling friendlier.

Do the math yourself: on Gorgias, you pay roughly $0.36-0.40 per ticket above the base tier. At 5,000 tickets per month above your limit, that is $1,800-2,000 extra. That is a full-time agent at some alternatives.

AI That Lags Behind

Gorgias offers AI features, but they feel like an add-on rather than a core component. The automatic responses are rule-based: if a customer writes X, send response Y. That works for simple queries but fails with nuance.

When a customer writes "I received the wrong size and I need it by Friday," a rule-based system struggles. It recognizes "wrong size" as a return category but misses the urgency and the implicit request for a fast replacement.

Modern AI draft replies go further. They understand context, urgency, and sentiment. They generate a response that addresses the specific situation, including the time pressure. The agent reviews and sends — instead of writing the entire response from scratch.

The difference in handle time is measurable. Teams that switch from rule-based automations to AI draft replies resolve complex tickets noticeably faster. Measure your AHT on complex tickets before and after the switch and you'll have your own number. For simple tickets, the gap is smaller. But for the tickets that truly matter — complaints, escalations, urgent requests — the difference is fundamental.

WooCommerce as an Afterthought

Gorgias is built for Shopify. WooCommerce support exists, but it is noticeably less deep. The integration offers basic order data, but often misses the depth that WooCommerce stores need.

Specifically: plugin-specific data (custom fields, particular shipping plugins, subscription plugins) frequently does not come through. If you use WooCommerce because you need flexibility, there is a good chance Gorgias does not fully reflect that flexibility in the agent interface.

For stores running both Shopify and WooCommerce (for different markets, for example), this gets even trickier. The experience on one platform is fundamentally different from the other, while your agents need consistency.

Limited Reporting and Insights

Gorgias offers standard reports: ticket volume, response time, CSAT. But for teams that want to dig deeper — cohort analyses, agent comparisons over time, correlation between response time and repeat contact — it falls short.

The data is sometimes there, but exporting and analyzing it requires workarounds. Teams that want to work seriously data-driven end up with disconnected spreadsheets and manual exports. That is not what you want to burden your support managers with.

What to Look for in an Alternative

Before you switch to anything, ask yourself these five questions:

Question 1: Does the pricing model fit my growth trajectory? If your ticket volume is seasonal or grows unpredictably, you want a pricing model that accommodates that. Per-agent pricing is more predictable. Per-ticket pricing penalizes growth.

Question 2: How deep is the ecommerce integration? Not just "does it show order data?" but: does it show tracking status, payment info, previous conversations, customer lifetime value, and return history? All next to the conversation, without extra clicks?

Question 3: How intelligent is the AI? Test it with real customer messages. Not simple questions like "what are your business hours?" but complex messages with multiple questions, emotion, and context. How good is the draft reply?

Question 4: How smooth is the migration? Can you bring over historical tickets? Are macros and templates transferred? Is there a migration service or do you do everything yourself? A helpdesk that makes your migration painless saves weeks of work.

Question 5: What do teams that switched say? Do not ask the vendor how good the product is. Ask teams that have made the switch. What went well? What was disappointing? How long did the transition actually take?

The Migration Path: From Gorgias to an Alternative

Fear of migration keeps many teams on Gorgias. "We already set up so many macros." "Our agents are used to the interface." "We do not want weeks of downtime." Those concerns are understandable but surmountable.

A structured migration typically takes 1-2 weeks and follows this path:

Week 1: Preparation. Export your macros, templates, and tags from Gorgias. Inventory your integrations. Set up the new system and import your configuration. Invite 1-2 pilot agents to test the new system with real tickets.

Week 2: Parallel run. Both systems run side by side. New tickets go to the new system. Ongoing conversations are finished in Gorgias. Agents learn the new interface with vendor support.

After week 2: Full switch. Gorgias goes read-only. All new tickets go to the new system. Historical data is imported and searchable. Agents work entirely on the new platform.

The key to a successful migration is not the technology — it is the communication. Explain to your team why you are switching, what will improve, and what the transition looks like. Agents who understand the "why" adopt the new system faster.

Is Gorgias better than Zendesk?

Depends on the team. Gorgias fits Shopify shops that want per-ticket pricing and deep Shopify automation; Zendesk fits organisations that need breadth, a large app marketplace, and enterprise governance, and pay per agent for it. For a WooCommerce store or a small team that wants AI and order context without an add-on budget, both have real gaps — that comparison is in the table above. Pick by the ticket you answer most, not by the brand you recognise.

The Right Choice Is the One That Grows With You

Gorgias is not a bad product. It is a product that works exceptionally well for a specific phase: the Shopify store with fewer than 2,000 tickets per month that needs basic automation. If that describes your situation, Gorgias is probably fine.

But if you have outgrown that phase — if your ticket volume is climbing, if your team is expanding, if you want more from AI, if you use WooCommerce, if per-ticket pricing makes your budget unpredictable — then it is time to honestly evaluate what could be better.

The best helpdesk is not the one with the most features. It is the one that scales with you without forcing a re-migration every two years. Choose based on your growth plan, not your current situation.
